How Jimmy Carter’s Legacy Inspired My Journey
Finding inspiration is often like discovering a hidden treasure amidst life’s journey – a transformative spark that ignites passions, fuels ambitions, and shapes careers. Whether found in the quiet contemplation of nature, the stirring words of a mentor, or the resilience of those who overcome adversity, inspiration has the profound ability to transcend moments, shaping our perspectives and propelling us towards new heights of creativity, purpose, and personal growth.
Finding inspiration in unexpected places has been a cornerstone of my journey, shaping both my personal growth and professional path. Recently, I had the honor of saying goodbye to Jimmy Carter, a President whose unwavering faith and tireless dedication to improving the lives of the poor have always inspired me. Standing in the Capitol rotunda, surrounded by fellow mourners, I experienced a full-circle moment—a chance to reflect on his legacy and the role he played in shaping my own aspirations.
As a classic extrovert, I struck up a conversation with the person behind me in the line, which stretched out in front of the Capitol through, 30-degree weather for over two hours. The natural question arose: “Why are you here?” My line-mate shared their fascination with Presidential history and had recently read Carter’s autobiography. For me, however, it was deeply personal.
an example of Integrity and Humility
In 1978, as a 16-year-old high school student visiting Washington, D.C. with the Close Up program, I stood outside Jimmy Carter’s White House, nurturing the spark of a dream. At the time, I had no clear idea of what “making a difference” would entail, but I knew I wanted to contribute to a better future.
Carter’s leadership during that post-Watergate era gave Americans a powerful example of integrity and humility—values I sought to emulate. Decades later, that dream came to fruition when my family and I moved to Washington, D.C., where I had the privilege of working on the Community Reinvestment Act alongside a team of community development experts at the Comptroller of the Currency.
Create a vision for yourself
As a leadership coach today, I often encourage others to dream bigger. I ask, “What else?” and “What’s possible?” because creating a vision for yourself—and for those you lead—is a cornerstone of effective leadership. It starts with imagining your own future and allowing yourself to be inspired by leaders who exemplify courage, integrity, and a commitment to a brighter tomorrow.
Throughout my career in federal service, I was often reminded of my journey’s origin. Standing near the White House gates—amid protesters, tourists, and students capturing selfies—I would pause to reflect, with deep gratitude, on how a single spark of inspiration as a high school student grew into a life of service and leadership.
Rest in peace, James Earl Carter. Thank you for your service to the nation and for inspiring generations to dream of—and work for—a better world.
